Hong Kong Convention & Exhibition Centre Draws a Record of Nearly 6 Million Attendees

September 4, 2011

More people than ever before attended shows at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre during fiscal year 2010-2011, with 5,969,789 coming through the doors of the venue, a 25-percent increase, compared with the prior fiscal year.

The big uptick in attendance was attributed to an expanded portfolio of events, 1,235, that were also held during fiscal year 2010-2011, according to HKCEC officials.

Of those 1,235 events held at the venue, 116 were exhibitions that utilized an average gross exhibition area of 16,272 square meters. Of the 116 exhibitions, 18 utilized a gross area of 30,000 sq. m. or more, according to HKCEC officials and 102 of the exhibitions were recurring, while 10 were new.

The 10 news shows were split - five were trade fairs and five were either public & trade shows or public shows.

The nine organizers of these shows included four that were based overseas and six that were organizing an exhibition at the HKCEC for the first time.

Thirty-five of the recurrent exhibitions recorded double-digit growth in terms of gross exhibition space, compared with their previous editions, with growth ranging from 10 percent to as much as 83 percent.

As one example, ART HK 2011 experienced almost 40 percent growth in size from the previous year, on top of the launch of two new concurrent events: ART FUTURES and ASIA ONE.

“We take pride in serving expanding recurrent exhibitions and introducing new events to our portfolio, both of which further consolidate HKCEC’s position as a preferred venue for event organizers,” said Cliff Wallace, managing director of the HKCEC Management (HML). This year’s remarkable achievement is a testament to the dedication, professionalism and experience of our 920 enthusiastic staff here at HML.”

He added that of the event organizers who responded to post-show surveys, 99 percent rated the service they received at the center as ‘satisfactory’ or above.

“Over its 23 years of operation, the HML team has hosted 39,606 events and has collectively served around 70 million buyers, exhibitors, visitors and guests,” Wallace said.

He added, “These events have contributed significant economic benefits to Hong Kong by generating beneficial spin-offs for related industries, created numerous jobs and business opportunities for SMEs, and raised Hong Kong’s international image and reputation.”
