Two good pieces of news came out of San Jose, Calif., last week, with Team San Jose, an economic development organization that also serves as the city’s convention and visitors bureau, being reupped to continue to oversee both the CVB and San Jose McEnery Convention Center.

The San Jose City Council approved new contracts with Team San Jose to not only take care of the center, but also other city venues such as  Parkside Hall, South Hall, City National Civic, Center for the Performing Arts, Montgomery Theater and California Theatre.

The decision to renew the contracts was made after team San Jose delivered strong financial results and a benchmarking study was done that indicated San Jose’s strong position in the meetings and convention industry, according to Team San Jose officials.

“As a result of the city and hotels $130M investment in the San Jose McEnery Convention Center, capital investment in the City National Civic, Center for the Performing Arts, Montgomery Theater and California Theatre, the city’s assets are thriving and clients are enjoying successful events,” said Karolyn Kirchgesler, chief executive officer of Team San Jose.

She added. “The new contracts provide stability for convention clients. Now our clients know that Team San Jose will be here to follow through on their events. We are thrilled with San Jose’s position within the meetings and convention marketplace and envision a successful future.”

Team San Jose met or exceeded each of its nine performance measures in FY 2012-2013, most notably growing revenue $12.3M over the original adopted budget and generating $5.3M in Gross Operating Profit.

Customer service continued to be strong, with a year-end result of 98 percent overall customer service rating.

Keeping customers even happier coming in to the center, Team San Jose also decided to offer the city’s “Wickedly Fast Wi-Fi” that already is offered at the airport and downtown.

“Convention center visitors, located in the heart of Silicon Valley, have come to expect access to the best technology experience possible,” Kirchgesler said.

The Wi-Fi is offered in-house and, according to team San Jose officials, clients will save up to 10 percent in technology services, compared with competitors.

The center has invested $1.5 million in its technology infrastructure in an effort to offer a “tailored, seamless, in-house approach to IT services,” Team San Jose officials said.
