The Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre (HKCEC) has been named ‘Asia’s Best Convention and Exhibition Centre’ by the annual CEI Asia industry survey and awards, as voted by readers of the MICE publication. This is the tenth time HKCEC has won the accolade which first began in 2001. UBM Asia announced this week that Joji George will be the new Managing Director of UBM India as of 3rd December. George will be taking over from Sanjeev Khaira who after three years in the role is returning to London. Khaira will take-up his new post as Managing Director – Market Development, EMEA in UBM Live. George was previously the CEO of Percept Sports and Entertainment – an organiser of some of the largest events held in India. After acquiring the Malaysian International Furniture Fair (MIFF) earlier this year, UBM Asia has announced plans to launch a complementary furniture and interior show next year. The Southeast Asia Furniture & Interiors Import-Export Exhibition (SEAFIE) will be held Sept. 13-16 at the Putra World Trade Centre, Kuala Lumpur. SEAFIE will be organised by the MIFF team and will complement MIFF. UBM Asia estimates the new show will cover a gross exhibition space of 45,000 m2 with 300 international exhibitors and 20,000 trade buyers. SIGGRAPH Asia, the conference and exhibition on computer graphics and interactive techniques, attracted more than 4,250 attendees from 56 countries over a four-day period. Organised by Contact Singapore, 22% of the attendees at the event were students from educational institutions, and a total of 68% of attendees were from overseas. This year’s International Association of Exhibitions and Events’ Expo! Expo! drew more than an estimated 2,000 attendees Dec. 4-6 to the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, where they had the opportunity to not only go to 80 educational sessions, but also network with colleagues at events such as the opening party at The Wizarding World of Harry Potter and check out products and services on a busy showfloor. From barbecue grills to solar filtration pumps and holiday decor, the newest products in outdoor living stole the spotlight at the Int’l Pool | Spa | Patio Expo that took place Nov. 6-8  at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center in New Orleans. The Consumer Electronics Association has launched a new program with the Startup America Partnership, a national network of communities dedicated to advancing the success of American start-ups, for the 2013 International CES, on tap Jan. 8-11 in Las Vegas. For the ninth quarter in a row, the trade show industry still is growing, according to the Center for Exhibition Industry Research’s latest CEIR Index, albeit at a slower rate in the third quarter of this year, with concerns over not only the looming fiscal cliff, but also the global economy. The Total Index grew 0.9 percent in the third quarter, after the first quarter grew 3 percent and the second quarter grew 1.7 percent, and companies have become more conservative, waiting to see how everything plays out.
